Changing your Google Play country: rules, limits and gift cards
The 90-day rule, what happens to your Play balance and subscriptions, the Family group restriction, and where Google sells Play gift cards.
The rules Google enforces
- 90 days between changes. After you first set a Play country you must wait at least 90 days before changing it, and at least 90 days between every later change. Google notes that additional restrictions can apply.
- You must be there. Setting up a new country requires being in that location and adding a payment method from that country.
- No changes inside a Family group. Members of a Google Family group can’t change their Play country.
- Balance stays behind. Google Play balance is linked to the country; balance from the old country can’t be spent in the new one.
- Subscriptions stay on the old profile. Existing subscriptions keep billing the old payment profile until you cancel them, and developers may cancel plans they don’t offer in the new country.
- Up to 48 hours. A new country profile can take up to 48 hours to update.
Read the terms first. Apple’s and Google’s store terms tie an account’s country to where you live, and both can ask for a payment method or address there. This guide is written for residents, people who have moved, and anyone checking prices; it does not explain how to misrepresent where you live.
Which storefronts accept Play gift cards
Google’s gift-card table lists the countries where Play gift cards are sold and their denominations; cards redeem only in the country where they were bought. The table below repeats Google’s entry for each tracked storefront (including countries where Google says cards were withdrawn) and the median price one reseller asked, compared with face value.

Play vs App Store vs web
Google Play shows only a price range for in-app purchases on its public listings, not the price of each plan, so we don’t publish Google Play plan prices. Product pages compare the channels we can observe per country (App Store, the vendor’s own website, Steam).
